A 5 day gravel bike tour through Italy’s most iconic mountain range: the Dolomites. Beginning in the Val di Fiemme, moving through the Val di Fassa and ending in the Val Gardena you will experience the classic riding that one would expect in the Dolomites including finishing with the Sellaronda ride. On the way we will discover the lesser known valleys on trails and paths following the routes made by our local experts.

The Dolomites form the natural geographical barrier between Italy and Austria but it is a mistake to think of them as being one area. In fact, each of the valleys have their own unique differences and moving between them we shift not only in place but also in primary language. During the Rolling Dreamers Dolomites Gravel Tour spectacular views are given in this area as are long steady climbs.

We begin in the Val di Fiemme, starting at around 1000m amid forests, meadows and limestone with the goal of discovering alternative dirt roads to the classic paved passes of the Dolomites. In addition are forests trails and an enviable network of cycle paths along the valley floor that will take us from here and eventually over to the Val di Fassa.

As the Dolomites is an international location there are food options that cater for all tastes but some of the local specialities are a definitely worth seining out (in our opinion!). The first is Kaiserschmarrn, a lightly sweetened pancake that takes its name from the Austrian emperor Franz Joseph I. This can be eaten as dessert and it’s often served with jam but also it can be ordered as a light lunch. Pancakes for lunch? That’ll get you up the next mountain. For savoury dishes, Canederli are dumpling that are found all across central and eastern Europe and beyond. Locally to the Dolomites are variants with speck (smoked pork) or with spinach. Try one. Or both!

Along the way we will discover the Cavalese waterfalls and (for those who wish) take a dip in the refreshing mountain water, marvel at El Pezo del Gazolin, a two hundred and forty year old spruce with a five metre trunk that dominates the surrounding forest and ride past disinterested cows that graze in the mountain pastures.

Heading northwards up the Valle di Fiemme to Predazzo, we cycle alongside the Rio Travignolo on an old mule track and join the road for the final part of the climb to Passo Rolle. The Baita Segantini refuge awaits and offers some refreshment with the backdrop of the Pale di San Martino. The spectacular white stone descent of the Luisa Pass takes us down into the Val di Fassa.

The Sellaronda is a must do bike ride for any cyclist. The 53km loop takes in the four most famous mountain passes of the Dolomites; Passo Sella, Passo Pordoi, Passo Campolongo and Passo Gardena. Our final day’s cycling in Val Gardena will take us from the valley to the start of the loop for a total of 77kms and 2430m of climbing.
